I read this today in the Wall Street Journal

Activision’s ‘Call of Duty’ Sets Sales Record

Activision Blizzard Inc. said the newest title in its popular Call of Duty franchise became the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row, generating more than $500 million in worldwide retail sales in the first 24 hours of its release, according to market research company Chart-Track.”

Folks, that’s a half a billion dollars IN ONE DAY, for some of the most gruesome violence that is portrayed apart from real life.

What’s sad is that both young people and grown adults play this alike. And what’s even sadder is that Christians play this.

I remember some years ago David Wilkerson speaking about being convicted of watching a certain TV show that had violence in it and mentioning this verse in Psalms being the motivation for his stopping.

Psalms 11:5

“The LORD examines the righteous,

but the wicked, those who love violence,

he hates with a passion.”

WOW, did you read that last part?

We live in a culture that loves violence

You see it on the movies to it’s games.

At least lets start with us a Christians…..let’s love what God loves and hate what God hates.

Let me add one more verse to the mix

Read Genesis 6

11 Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

13 Then God said to Noah, The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. 14 Make for yourself an ark

Why did God destroy the earth with a flood?  VIOLENCE

Why should we pay $60-70 to support something that God destroys planets over?

I know there are things in my own life that need to come into alignment with this grid:  Loving what God loves and hating what God hates.

I close with a very telling test given some years ago by one of the great Christian devotional writers, AW Tozer.

AW Tozer gave 7 ways to really know ourselves and know what our character is like

See how you do on the test

Rules for Self Discovery:

1. What we want most;

2. What we think about most;

3. How we use our money;

4. What we do with our leisure time;

5. The company we enjoy;

6. Who and what we admire;

  1. What we laugh at.

Not only does CALL OF DUTY in a Christian’s library fall under many of these categories but every time I read this, I find other things that I do and support fall into this that God is not pleased with.

I have never owned CALL OF DUTY or even played it

But that in no way exonerates me in other areas.

I want every area of my life, my viewing, my reading to fall under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

God CALLS US TO DUTY EVERY DAY…..I want to be as faithful to hearing and obeying as some are to loading and playing.

Let’s shelf one CALL OF DUTY & get a revival by responding to another CALL OF DUTY.

  1. I know someone who owns Call Of Duty and its pretty violent. I worked in the medical field for several years and there have been people who have come into the hospital with brain seizures due to playing this particular game. Not everything that seems good is beneficial. And what I mean by that, is that, what seems harmless, may not be good for you. Games like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty just do not contibute to making you a better person.
