My Non-Medical Opinion

(please don’t think I am belittling any disorder)

I’VE GOT A FUNNY FEELING ABOUT ALL THIS ADD STUFF

I am amazed that if any child is active today and has a short attention span, they are immediately labeled as ADD or ADHD.  Active, short attention span….??? C’mon folks that is the definition of “children” in the dictionary. And I have 4 of them.

I have this funny notion that since our society has looked  down on spanking and because  schools have removed corporal punishment, there seems to be a strong coincidence with the rise of these new disorders.

Less discipline then more diagnosis and new capital letters. I want to capitalize letters too…..K-I-D-S.

I would also add to the list the loss of children wanting to be outside playing .They have lost the desire to be out of the house and the ability to be creative because of  game systems. The games have taken away the imagination of our children.  Where we could find incredible uses for pieces of wood, dad’s tools and trees…. now we just stare at screens.  No one builds a tree house anymore.  We would rather arm ourselves with automatic assault weapons and walk through the streets of some middle eastern country with our fellow naval seals and we are only just 10 years old.

Ritalin is our new and easy answer. Ritalin I believe has replaced spanking and playing outside. It so much easier to give medication than to raise children.

You may think of me as simplistic and insensitive to those who really have this disorder. It’s not meant to be.  I just have a funny feeling about all this ADD stuff.

  1. I’ve got 5 kids, as you know, ALL of them at one time or another fit the description. Now, my oldest, is 19 and calm, mature & intelligent. She seemed to grow out of it as we our also observing in our kids.

Besides the need for discipline, I think kids today need PARENTS (not adults trying to be peers).

    I’m with you…

  2. ~ 100% ~ agreement. I have 3 boys, if I took them to the Dr., they would say they all 3 have ADD. In fact 3 times in 5 secs of writing this my youngest said, ” daddy can I play your iPad?” In east Texas we call that – ALL BOY; In fact there’s something wrong, if someone’s not getting spanked, playing with gasoline and fire, and leaving quakes behind them like an 9.5 earthquake just took place. My mother never asked us any questions, we were just locked outside all day during the summer and weekends.

Spare the rod, spoil the child. Put them outside and you’ll knock that ADD out flat…

    Blessings Rev’D…

  3. I agree with you on some level. I grew up with many cousins (by many I mean over 20) and we were always outside playing and being creative. However I did have one cousin who had the same upbringing who was diagnosed with ADHD…..so I believe it is definitely a real disease, but also some parents today just don’t want to deal with their children and use the ‘gadgets’ as a substitute.

  4. I agree 100%! Wait and see the next generation will have no interpersonal skills. Which has already started. Kids are not learning coping skills and dealing with confrontation. They will all have anger issues and depression. They will be on anti depression meds too. Just saying…..

  5. Tim,
I think every child with the diagnosis of ADD or ADHD would greatly benefit if their parent’s were placed on Ritlan!! 🙂
That is my professional opinion. LOL!! They get active, they give them the meds because they can not handle them and then the children are like zombies and it breaks my heart. I believe discipline starts at home.
Most Christians won’t discipline and we wonder why we have the problems in the school. If the church would know their Bible and follow Biblical principles…yes there would still be problems to deal with but I believe if you follow the principles of the Bible God will honor and bless.
Just my personal opinion. I believed in spanking my children but I always explained why I was disciplining them, gave them opportunity to repent, prayed with them and after I disciplined them I loved on them. Our children are far from perfect, but God still honors if you are obedient to His Word.

  6. I AGREE. I VOLUNTEER IN CHILDREN’S MINISTRY IN MY CHURCH & I SEE BEHAVIOR OF CHILDREN WHO AREN’ T DISCIPLINED “WELL” BY THEIR PARENTS & I’VE SEEN CHILDREN WHO ARE PROPERLY CORRECTED/TRAINED BY THEIR PARENTS. WHEN I WAS A CHILD , WE HAD CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IN MY SCHOOL & CHILDREN LISTENED, BEHAVED, HAD RESPECT FOR AUTHORITY, ETC. YOU ARE RIGHT.
