There are purists that get mad at me when I use THE MESSAGE version of the Bible in my preaching. These are people that are so bent on defending a version of the Bible that they forget the essence of the Bible. Today , I read an epistle in The Message that reminded me why I love the way it reads. Now don’t get me wrong….I’ve read a lot of The Message and what happens for me is I got to get through 6 silly paraphrases before I get to the “knock out of the park” one. And I’m willing to read through silly to get to profound. Today I got to one those home run passages.
It stood out to me because it’s about communicating the Word of God. It was Paul’s prayer and desire on how to communicate this incredible message.
Listen to these magnificent words:
“We teach in a spirit of profound common sense so that we can bring each person to maturity. To be mature is to be basic. Christ! No more, no less”
(Colossians 1:28 Message)
HOME RUN WORDS!
Take note pastors, teachers, Bible college professors, Sunday school teachers. Read those words again.
This is how I want to teach: with PROFOUND COMMON SENSE. It’s teaching that brings the church to maturity. It’s teaching that helps them grow up; Not teaching that exalts the teacher. And I love the essence and goal of maturity….it’s Christ; not some , super spiritual person. Just someone that looks more like Jesus today then they did yesterday. They don’t look like a denomination , or you, but Jesus.
My new prayer before I speak each week….GOD GIVE ME PROFOUND COMMON SENSE. WORDS THAT MAKE PEOPLE GROW AND LOOK MORE AND MORE LIKE YOU.
