LET THE LION OUT OF THE CAGE

We have dangerously come to a place thinking that inviting people to church is the same as inviting someone to Jesus.  They are not equal.

And in like fashion, we have had more excitement over Christian books and and building men’s and small groups around “a” book instead of The Book. It seems that we get more out of  Rick Warren, Andy Stanley, Platt, Lucado, Chan and Eldridge than Paul, Peter and Luke.   Now don’t get me wrong….(read this so as not to be misunderstood) I have 7,000 books in my library, and I have nothing personal against these authors and their writings.  But I can never choose CS over Jude and John, and neither should you.  Bible studies are no longer Bible studies but popular Christian book studies.  “What book are we studying this month?” is what men’s groups are asking; as if to say the “66” is good but we need to move on.

The Bible is THE Book but it is slowly being forgotten in our churches and the lesser is replacing the potent.

Remember, when the Bible is read, God’s Word does things.  It talks to hearts. It crushes hard hearts and suprises the deaf hearts.

When C.S. Lewis came to Oxford University he was an atheist. He had lost his mother at nine and the rest of his life was spent in boarding schools. But had no use or belief in God. But while at Oxford he met a man who became his best friend: J.R.R. Tolkein. You know him as the author of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkein, along with some other friends challenged Lewis to investigate the Bible. So Lewis did. It was from that investigation and through the counsel of his friends that Lewis moved from atheism to a deep Christian faith. And Lewis is not alone. There have been many brilliant, even famous people who have given the Bible an honest, objective chance and have come to understand it as the truth. People like Josh McDowell, Charles Colson, Lee Strobel, Kirk Cameron, Charlton Heston, Barbara Bush, Corrie Ten Boom, Connie Seleca. What did they do? They simply took the Bible and studied it. …This book that was written over 1500 years by 40 different writers on 3 different continents is more than just any ordinary book. It can change your life.

When people read the Bible you have stepped into unsafe waters for your soul.  Because these are not ordinary words, but these are the magnificent words of God.

I like what Charles Spurgeon said about the Bible.

“How do I defend the Bible?  I treat it like a lion.  I let it out of its cage and it defends itself.”

WE LOST THE BIBLE IN THE CHURCH

Those words may sound funny but I think this is happening today.

Something similar happened thousands of years ago in II Kings 22.  When Josiah became king he wanted the temple to be repaired. He was a reformer king, a revival king; and while they were fixing up the temple they found God’s Word which had been lost in His house.

WHAT DOES THAT VERSE MEAN?

Ever read a tough Bible verse and can’t figure out what it means?

What do you do to figure it out it’s meaning?

Google?

Sadly , Google is becoming the most common used commentary for people who don’t understand a Bible verse.

There are plenty of Bible verses that we read and don’t know what to do next with the mystery of a passage.

We have to have some plan.

I have some help for you and it’s very simple.

Here are some thoughts through the ages on how to get meaning from a passage.

It is simple but it’s profound.

This is the way I have read and studied the Bible

The second greatest resource you can have after a concordance is a THE TREASURY OF SCRIPTURE KNOWLEDGE.  It is ONE MILLION cross references on every verse of the Bible. It is the Thompson Chain Reference on steroids.  It is the greatest resource for interpreting a passage.  It interprets the Bible with the Bible.
