I was told that  personally…

I was told that the day of the preacher is gone and I need to learn how to be a “communicator”.

“That is your problem”, the young pastor told me. He pastors an up and coming church. I think his success was now clouding his thoughts.

How sad that we are now letting culture and society dictate how the church is to operate.

Romans 10:14 “how will they hear without a communicator….” I think it says PREACHER.
I was reading an article last week called “the juvenilization of God”.  It’s basic premise is that we have dumbed down our services and are now treating our congregations like Junior High kids that need smoke, lights and lattes in order for people to come and listen to us “communicate”.
I happen to be one of those old fashioned guys that think Jesus is enough.
I know, here it comes….”We do all that, AND think Jesus is enough!” will be the cry of those blasting this post.
I would be quiet if the message wasn’t getting dumbed down also. I think the message is getting effected now by the means. I think true preaching is best defined by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones who said it was “theology on fire.”
We dress up better on Mondays now then we do on Sundays.  God forbid if someone “communicates” longer than 17-21 minutes.  It would be “ichabod” if we didn’t have a schedule that told us what was next on the agenda.  And how dare you call your church by some religious name like “revival” , “tabernacle”, “redeemer” and not use words like “community” and non religious terms in the name.
I think we are getting intoxicated with pursuits after misplaced passions.  After the flat screens, the macchiatos, flip flops and Hawaiian shirts, a bunch of metaphorical songs about sloppy wet kisses are done….if the Holy Spirit descends, then who am I to say anything.  Then keep on sipping, flip flopping, and singing metaphors. But if there is no fire, conviction, repentance, but just simply adjusting the church to fit your mode of life then we have missed it….BIG TIME.
“If the church tries to be embraceable by everyone
we lose our power to Influence anyone.”

  1. Tim, I love you! Preach it brother! Man, I miss David Wilkerson, a preachers preacher in his prime. Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking when they say stuff like this? Maybe lend him a Leonard Ravenhill book. God send us fired up Holy Ghost PREACHERS!!! We ask this in Jesus Name!

  2. So true, I often pray for the churches in NYC and Africa that God will bring us back to our first love. In Revelation, God tells one of the churches to buy the gold that has been purified by Him. May God turn us back to Himself for the glory of His name.
On a side note, as someone in my 20s, I find it very insulting when the message is dumbed down and have not susbstance. We are not stupid, and most of us don’t like being treated like we are. We want susbtance above all. Doesn’t the bible ask us not to conform to the ways of this world? Oh Lord bring us back to you. Thank you again Pastor Tim for your integrity, praying for God keeping power over you and yours.

  3. Amen!! My cats communicate.., …but…”…………..it pleased God by the foolishness of PREACHING to save them that believe” I Corinthians 1:21…
It seems that in trying to be so culturally relevant, a euphemism for worldliness, we have lost our vision, we have lost our reverence and respect for things that are holy, including things and places dedicated to God (that is why we dress up better on Monday than we do on Sunday)
I praise God everyday that my faith was ignited through hearing of the Word, and I heard it through the voice of a PREACHER….

  4. Great word. Jesus was a preacher. There is a major trend all over the country to down play the importance of preaching. If it was good enough for Christ, it’s good enough for me. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I believe in the old style preacher, those sermons that are on fire, I remember clearly that it was a life and death situation with me, that when I walked into Times Square Church, The sermons preached by Pastor David Wilkerson, Pastor Carter, and without trying to impress you, You, and Pastor Claude Hoot, where the ones that had messages that were on fire. I work for NYC transit, and during the 911,crisis I was transporting firefighter’s and Police officers into the seen. I saw on a daily basis the devestation, the smoke and breathed the smell of death. I was new in the Lord and I thank God the almighty and Jesus Christ for bringing me to the Lord with the preaching that came out of that pulpit. It was PREACHING and NOT COMMUNICATORS,flowery words nor fireworks. Then my first visit to Brooklyn Tab at that time, preaching by Pastor Jim Cymbala was encouraging. So my salvation, had to do with preaching.

  6. Amen Pastor! I am tired of “New Age Preachers” that try to insinuate that old fashioned preaching is not good enough for “today’s generation.” I’m a twenty-four year old young Woman who is trying to fill my life with the Word of God, ON FIRE preaching and of course PRAYER PRAYER and more PRAYER. The last thing I would need in my not fully developed mind is watered down, “safe”, speech from a “communicator” I need the RAMAH word of GOD to keep my Spirit alive in GOD!

Thanks Pastor for sharing and for your ministry. My family and I pray for you and your family daily 🙂
p.s. It was the greatest pleasure meeting you at Brooklyn Tab in early APRIL 🙂

  7. “The motto of all true servants of God must be, ‘We preach Christ; and him crucified.’ A sermon without Christ in it is like a loaf of bread without any flour in it. No Christ in your sermon, sir? Then go home, and never preach again until you have something worth preaching.” ~ Spurgeon 1876
